SPECIAL EVENTS

All Trails Hike
Jan, 21, 2012
Start time between 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM. Hike part or all twelve-mile trails at your own pace. Rest stops - water, fruit and cookies every two miles with lunch provided. Cost is $10 and all children under 16 are free. Dogs permitted, on leash only.

 

Third Annual Scrub Jay Festival
Feb, 4, 2012
The Florida Scrub-Jay Festival: Past, Present and the Future of Florida Scrub-Jays will feature tram tours of the scrub-jay habitat, guided nature walks, a panel discussion, music and arts and crafts for children. Environmental groups will have exhibits on topics of interest. Admission is free and food will be available for purchase.

Twelfth Annual Scrub Jay 5k 10k Race
and 1 mile Fun Walk
Saturday February 18, 2012
Presented by the Manasota Track Club and the Friends of Oscar Scherer. Registration is required for this MTC sanctioned race. Adults $25, Youth 14-18 $20.  No charge, children under 14

Sarasota Folk Festival
March 24 & 25, 2012
If you enjoy folk music you can’t miss this event. Musicians from around the state will share their love o folk music with you.  This will be the ninth folk festival sponsored by the Sarasota Folk Club. There will be statewide musicians, delicious food, many fine vendors selling excellent products, workshops, jams, family music & fun for kids! Kiwanis Fishathon
April 7, 2012 8am to 11am
In cooperation with the Kiwanis club of Venice and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission we invite you to come out and catch some fish with us. Open to the first 50 kids age 5-12 and their parents. We will provide the poles, bait, tackle and lunch. Prizes will be given in several categories.  To register please stop by or call the Ranger Station at 941-483-5956.  Registration opens 1 week before the event.

Annual Earth Day Celebration
April 22, 2012 10am to 5pm
Come celebrate Earth Day at Oscar Scherer State Park with live music, kids activities, environmental booths and lots of other great activities.  Admission is free.

Father’s Day Compass Event
June 17, 2012
Get outside on father’s day weekend and learn how to use a compass. Weather you are just getting started or have experience with a compass we’ve got something for you.
Pre-registration begins June 1st call or stop by the Ranger Station 941-483-5956 to sign up.
 

National Public Lands Day
September 29, 2012 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Learn about all the great volunteer opportunities at the park, see our volunteers in action and help us give thanks to all the fantastic volunteers that make Oscar Scherer State Park so wonderful. Food, music, guided walks, tram tours and other great activities

Come explore South Creek after dark on a moonlight paddle. Pre-registration begins 1 week before the date of the paddle by stopping by the Ranger Station or calling 941-483-5956. Space is limited to 10 vessels. $10 for campers with their own vessel, $15 if coming from outside the park and $20 if coming from the outside and wish to use our canoes or kayaks.

Aerobics
:   Join us for a workout guaranteed to get your blood flowing!  Open to all ages.  Free

Wednesday  9:00 AM
Guided Canoe Ride.
  Join a ranger for a guided canoe ride on South Creek.  Rent your canoe and draw the equipment at the Ranger Station by 8:30 and meet at the canoe launch at the South Creek Picnic Area.  No prior experience necessary.  Open to the first 24 people.

Thursday  8:00 -10:00 AM (December – March)
Pancake Breakfast
:  Blueberry pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea, and juice.  Made to order.  All this for $4.00!  Children under twelve are $2.00, under six are free. You won’t leave hungry!

Thursday 8:30 -10:30 AM  (October – March)
Guided Bird Walk
.  Join our experts.  Free.  Usually more than twenty species identified. Bring your binoculars.  During January to March, the pancake breakfast is served at 8:00.  Finish in time for the bird walk.

Friday  8:30 AM (December – March)
Guided Ranger Hike
.  Join one of our rangers as they lead you on an hour’s hike and explain the sights and sounds of the park.  Free.

Saturday  8:00 -10:00 AM
Camper Coffee:
  Coffee, juice, donuts provided free.  Brochures about local events and activities.  Volunteers to answer your questions about hiking trails, other activities in the park, and things to do in the area during your stay at Oscar Scherer.

Sunday 8:30 AM
Scrub Walk. 
Spend your Sunday Mornings with the Scrub Jays- a Unique Central  Florida Experience Includes a Nature Walk with a zoologist and/or botanist  Free.

9:30 AM (January – March)
Church Service. 
This is a nondenominational service.  All are welcome.
