In 2006, volunteer efforts at Oscar Scherer were recognized in these categories:
Project of the Year, Volunteer Group of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, CSO of the Year, Project of the Year, and Youth of the Year.

The state level Youth of the Year was sixteen year old Bobby Stanbaugh. Bobby spent the summer and most of his available free time volunteering at Oscar Scherer removing exotics, splitting firewood for the campers and participating in several construction projects in the park. His attitude, willingness to work hard, and his overall desire to improve Oscar Scherer for visitors made him a clear choice for this honor. He was the second youth to win this honor at Oscar Scherer. Natalie Steves also was the Youth Volunteer of the Year in 2003.
The Project of the Year also was awarded to the Friends of Oscar Scherer for the construction of the Observation Bench over Big Lake. This project was completely designed by the Friends as an ADA facility, funded by them, and totally constructed with volunteer labor. It provides a wonderful opportunity to observe bird life along the Yellow Trail and is considered to be the premier destination hike in the park.
We are equally proud of our other nominees: Ed Dannenberg, John Mongelli, and Russ Delaney as Volunteer of the Year each who contributed in excess of 500 hours during 2006 in addition to their efforts in many other areas; the 2006 Scrub Jay 5K which raised $8000 for the Friends as the Event of the Year; the construction of the suspension bridge as the Project of the Year, and the Friends of Oscar Scherer as the CSO of the Year.
